What is the Best Way to Hang Wall Decor?Do I hang it from the couch up or from the ceiling down?
That is the question most asked when trying to hang wall decor. As a general rule of thumb, pictures,
mirrors or clocks are generally hung from the floor up before furniture is in place. If this is not possible, use furniture as a guide rather than the ceiling. Decor should be eye level, and measuring decor placements from the ceiling down tend to make décor appear too high on the wall.
How to Get the Perfect Hang
- Find the area where you want to hang your décor.
- Measure five feet from the floor using a tape measure and lightly mark with a pencil. On average, five feet is the level of eyesight. This mark is the center point of your object that you will hang.
- Once marked, take the object and measure its height, divide in half and place a mark at that point, which is the center of the object. That is where you will hang it at the five-foot mark.
For objects requiring more than one nail to hang, such as heavy mirrors,
murals or
clocks
- From the five-foot mark measured from the floor up, measure another half of what the object's total length is and lightly mark with a pencil. For instance, if your object's length is 12 inches, you will measure 6 inches plus the five feet you already have. The measurement you come up with is where the top of your object will hang.
- If there are two hanging brackets on the back of the object, measure the area between them, starting from the middle of one bracket to the middle of the other.
- Then measure the area from the top of the object down to the bracket. Do this on both sides, as they may not be symmetrical. Use this measurement to measure down from the highest mark you made on the wall. For instance, if the brackets each measure 2 inches from the top of the mirror, measure down and mark 2 inches.
- Take a level and measure from center point the width of the hanging brackets you measured in #2. Make sure the area you measure is level. For example, if the measurement between the brackets is 12 inches, measure with a ruler at the 6-inch mark 12 inches, and mark at the endpoints.
- Once you have determined the area to be level, hammer a nail at the endpoints.
- Hang your object, making sure both nails fit securely in the brackets.
Check the level one more time to make sure your object is hung perfectly.
