For some people, picking the ideal location to start a garden is as easy as walking outside your back door, especially if you live in an apartment and are limited to your back patio, which could consist of a wood deck or concrete porch. Such limitation may only allow enough space for potted or square-foot gardening, with very little shading options. In that case, erecting a barrier that would protect your tender plants from too much sun exposure would help to ensure healthy growth throughout the season while producing beautiful flowers or a harvest bounty.

Others may be limited to planting against a wall, as I did when I was growing up. I remember planting tomato plants in the back yard against our building. We lived in an area that was blessed with rich soil, but I also used cow manure to assure a harvest of large, great tasting tomatoes, because there is nothing like the taste of a summer tomato! To provide the plants with enough water, I came up with an irrigation system by digging a ditch around the plants and between them, and every evening I would turn the hose on at one end and let the water fill the ditch until the ground got saturated. This method produced the best tomatoes around. Now, 35 years later, and living in another area of the country, I have not been able to find, or duplicate, that taste again.

What if you don’t have a back yard or back porch but have your heart set on growing plants? If you have a window, you can set a potted plant on the sill or, if your landlord allows it, you can purchase an inexpensive windowbox. Again, depending on the time of day the sun hits that window should help to determine what type of plants you can plant. Some like morning sun, others like the hotter, afternoon sun. Some windows have all-day sun exposure which may not be good for some plants. The window you are limited to use will help you to decide what you can plant.

Flowering plants such as some species of roses, can be trained to grow on a trellis. Usually, trellises are latticework frames that support growing vines or plants. A trellis can make a lovely addition to a bare outside wall. Trellises embellished with rose vines bring to mind the timeless beauty of romantic archways and gazeboes.

Now living in the south, I’ve seen countless yards graced with beautiful flowering magnolia trees. Being raised in the north, I never saw such huge flowers growing on a tree such as these beauties.

During the very early spring, camellias are one of the first flowering plants you will find. These gorgeous flowers resemble roses and at times can be mistaken as rose bushes. One of the places I have visited that has a bounty of these beauties is the Queens Garden at The Lost Colony in Manteo, NC. They bloom among the hyacinths and before the tulips bloom. While guests who come early in the season may be disappointed to see no roses blooming, they are treated to a blaze of camellia color throughout the garden.
